If you care about sports, good writing, laughing, being smart, or rap, you should probably throw some $$$s at The Classical‘s g-string on their Kickstarter. Here’s the press release:

————————

The Classical is a daily web publication. We’ve written about sports and other things for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, GQ, The Nation, Yahoo! Sports, New York Magazine, Vice, Pitchfork, and more. We’ve started blogs you love, written books you’ve bought, and tweeted with you about critical theory, punk rock, and Kevin Durant. The Classical is the place where we write about those things some more, but on our terms, for ourselves and for the audience we know is out there.

Every day, The Classical will deliver several regular columns, a host of quick, random goodness, and a fun, smart community for talking about the sports world. There will be long features (a 25,000-word piece on Pete Alexander, say, or introductions to particular niches of sports fandom) and contributions from the world: prizewinning novelists, internet celebrities, guys and girls we went to school with who are unappreciated geniuses, members of the public. There will be theme weeks in the spirit of FreeDarko’s “Dream Week,” on-the-ground reporting when we can, and essays commissioned by you, the readers.

We will make no attempt to be comprehensive, or even to offer a reliable guide to the world of sport at a given moment. We will not try to be a smarter version of what you can find elsewhere. Instead, The Classical will be a running, wide-ranging conversation between us and our readers about baseball, basketball, soccer, football and fighting, and about things that aren’t sports, too. Our model in this regard is The Awl, a site for which many of us have written and which all of us love.

Writing about sports the way that smart people talk about sports is a simple idea, and a good one. To do it right, though—to set up a sustainable business, rather than yet another blog or Tumblr—takes some money. Site design and hosting, lawyering and other businessish stuff, and keeping a couple of us at this full time while we show and prove ourselves will require resources. We need to fund our budget for one year, and we need your help to do it.

PETE BEATTY: Who is registered to vote in Brooklyn, NY, and edits books during the daytime hours, including Craig Robinson’s Flip Flop Fly Ball. He has written for GQ.com, the Chicago Tribune, Pitchfork.com, Time Out Chicago, and the Internet. He is the only Cleveland Indians fan you have ever met and has stated that he plans to have a string quartet play Double Nickels on the Dime at his wedding (he is single).

TOM BREIHAN: Who is a writer from Baltimore who lives in Virginia. He used to write the Village Voice’s Status Ain’t Hood blog and also used to work for Pitchfork. He’s written, mostly about music but sometimes about pro wrestling, for GQ, Spin, Blender, the Chicago Reader, the Baltimore City Paper, and a bunch of other publications. He is taller than you, and his daughter will also be taller than you soon enough.

FREDORRARCI: Who is a writer from Ireland. He is the owner/operator of Sport Is A TV Show, and has contributed to Norman Einstein’s Sports & Rocket Science Monthly and The Run of Play. He follows Arsenal, and will tut at anyone who tries to tell him that snooker is not a sport.

ERIC FREEMAN: Who is a writer from San Francisco, CA. He contributes daily to Yahoo!’s Ball Don’t Lie NBA blog and has written for GQ, The Awl, and FreeDarko. He was also a co-author of The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. In his spare time, he reads long novels, watches weird movies, and yells at his television.

TIM MARCHMAN: Who is a writer out of Chicago, IL. Currently a Knight-Wallace fellow in journalism at the University of Michigan, he has written for various publications including the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated and the New York Sun, where he was the baseball correspondent from 2003 to 2008. He admires The Mekons and Jon Fitch.

ERIC NUSBAUM: Who was a U.S. Census Crew Leader in Seattle, WA, where he still lives. He founded and co-edits the baseball blog Pitchers & Poets. His writing has appeared in Slate, Deadspin, GQ.com, TheAtlantic.com, and The Best American Sports Writing anthology.

KATE PERKINS: A pro basketball and tennis enthusiast who has edited at n+1 and Verso Books. Resident minimalist.

DAVID ROTH: Who is a writer from New Jersey, and who lives in New York. He co-writes the Wall Street Journal’s Daily Fix and writes the unpopular sports column The Mercy Rule for Vice. He also writes about sports and other things for The Awl, New York Magazine and GQ, among other places. He’s a Mets fan, so he knows all about how that feels.

TOM SCHARPLING: Who is the host of the radio show “The Best Show on WFMU.” He was a writer and executive producer of the Emmy-Award winning show Monk and wrote for SLAM magazine as a young lad. He is currently developing two shows for Comedy Central and finds himself rooting for Kevin Durant but relating more to Monta Ellis.

BETHLEHEM SHOALS: Who is the founder of FreeDarko and a co-author of The Macrophenomal Pro Basketball Almanac and The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. He has written about sports for GQ, Sports Illustrated, McSweeney’s, and Deadspin, and about non-sports stuff for The Nation and The Awl.

LANG WHITAKER: Who is SLAM magazine’s editor-at-large, and a contributor to NBA TV. He is the author of The Time of Bobby Cox: The Atlanta Braves, Their Manager, My Couch, Two Decades and Me and a co-author of The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Sports Illustrated and Esquire. He plays a lot of video games

Check out the video above that demonstrates the really awesome wedding invitation for Mike and Karen’s wedding by Kelli Anderson. It’s basically a wedding invitation that transforms into a makeshift paper record player. Pretty amazing. This is what Kelli Anderson had to say about it (but check out the whole blogpost for more details and pics):

I just finished up a really fun project—a paper record player wedding invitation! In the booklet-style invitation, a bit of paper-folding amplifies the sound of a sewing needle moving along the grooves of a flexidisc record. The hand-spun record yields a garbled, but scrutable listening of an original song by the couple. It requires a bit of tinkering and folding —effectively championing the inner science-nerd kid in the recipient. The whole thing serves as an interactive packaging for the song—which can be experienced on the paper record player, unscrewed + set on a regular turntable, or enjoyed online (for the non-nerds and/or audiophiles out there.)

Back again with another edition of THINGS WE LIKE! Woop wooooop!

I’ve got a real love/hate relationship with The Hype Men Podcast. I like it because it’s nerdy dudes talking about rap for an hour with occasionally interesting guests. I hate it because sometimes it’s just unbearably nerdy at a very specific, uninteresting level… and it all too often turns into Jensen relaying pointless anecdotes about BEING A WHITE RAPPER SIGNED BY INTERSCOPE and WORKING WITH KANYE and blah blah blah. We get it, buddy: Interscope tried to cash in on your whiteness and multi-syllabic rhyme patterns and Jimmy Iovine would probably spot you money for an Orange Julius if he saw you in the mall. (By the way, what the eff is up with white rappers and multi-syllabic rhyme patterns?)

Anyway, I guess my point is, I have a love/hate relationship with this podcast mostly because of lack of options. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there’s not a whole lot of rap-related podcasting available, which seems really silly to me. Surely there’s plenty of people that would love to hear hour long interviews with their favorite rappers that delve into deeper discussions than the 5 minute youtube/vimeo/worldstar interview clips where random-rapper-guy is just like “YEAH I WAS IN THE STUDIO WITH WIZ KHALIFA AND HE SEEMS PRETTY COOL! BY THE WAY GO BUY MY NEW ALBUM! SHOUT OUT TO DUBLIN, IRELAND!” or whatever. I guess the Juan Epstein Podcasts are good but they don’t come along frequently enough. A podcast is unfortunately only as good as the podcasters’ commitment to updating frequently. So, yeah, begrudgingly, I like the Hype Men Podcast and you should check it out when you get a chance. The Just Blaze Episode is legitimately great and Fat Jew Episode is legitimately hilarious. Their entire archive is worth scrolling through. They’ve interviewed 88 Keys, Jean Grae, Freddie Gibbs, and a few other notables. Also, Jensen sharing 2 of Yeezy’s earliest beat tapes is an awesome look.

Kudos to the Hype Men boys for trailblazing this hip-hop podcasting ish and, at the very least, providing a constant stream of material that at least ATTEMPTS to move in more interesting directions than most rap journalism out there. And, big up rap nerds everywhere!

I’m starting a new series on this here blog called THINGS WE LIKE devoted to things that aren’t related to music that we’re into over here at CFB HQ. One of these such things is Marc Maron’s ridiculously awesome WTF Podcast. For those not knowing, Marc Maron is veteran comedian that’s been around for the better part of 20 years and is good buddies with folks that are a lot more famous then him (but not significantly funnier then him). He basically uses this podcast as an excuse to interview a rich variety of comedians–most of which he has personal relationships with–and conducts really personal, insightful, engaging, and often times touching interviews with these folks. Maron isn’t interested in being a journalist in the classical sense so he interjects himself and his own issues into the interview very frequently, but this isn’t a shortcoming at all. In fact, Maron’s insistence on interjecting his own mania and issues into each and every conversation is primarily what pushes these conversations in such interesting directions. He really has a gift for this type of interview and it’s pretty clear that he’s in his element when conversing with these folks: riffing, exploring, postulating, proselytizing, cracking stupid jokes, and even flirting with the variety of female comics he interviews that he’s clearly in love with. Anyway, I can’t get enough of this podcast and highly suggest you check it out. I’ve posted links to some of my favorite interviews below, but even the interviews with comedians you’ve never heard of before are really awesome.

Conan O’Brien
This interview just went up yesterday and is a really interesting talk with Conan who comes across as a really intelligent, compassionate, interesting guy.

Carl LaBove
Really interesting interview with Sam Kinison’s best buddy Carl LaBove. LaBove tells a bunch of stories about coming up with Kinison and reveals some really crazy personal stuff about their relationship. Heart-breaking stuff really.

Mike DeStefano
Speaking of heart-breaking, this interview with the recently deceased Mike DeStefano (RIP) is not for the faint of heart. In this interview DeStefano reveals his struggles with being HIV Positive, taking care of his HIV Positive wife in her dying days, growing up a wanna-be wise guy in the Bronx, and a bunch of other stuff. This is truly one of the most heart-wrenching interviews I’ve ever listened to, but DeStefano is inspiring in his positive, hilarious approach to life in the face of it all. If you listen to just ONE of these interviews, make it this one.

Louis CK (Part I) (Part II)
Maron and Louis were buddies back in the day. Somewhere along the line, their friendship fell apart. This two part interview is basically the two of them working things out… which sounds boring, but it’s not because their both goofy and hilarious.

Hope y’all enjoy this stuff as much as I do!

“No two days are alike, except the first and fifteenth pretty much!!”

Not to be confused with Lupe Fiasco’s Production Company, Crossfaded Bacon is proud to present the triumphant return of the 1st & 15th Mix Series (now entitled the 1st & 15th Mixcast!) tomorrow March 1st with DJ Last Word’s fantastic new-rap-&-original-samples mixtape Somewhere Between Fast Food and Vegan Volume 2 (snippets of which can be heard here and here).

To prep for the mixtape and the return of the series, we’ve gone ahead and uploaded all 22 previous installments of the Mix Series on our Mixcloud page where you can stream each of the mixes in all their glory. If you’re not the streaming type, feel free to download any and all of the mixes RIGHT HERE as well.
Thanks in advance for all the support and we’ll see you back on this page every 1st & 15th (but hopefully more often then that)!

This is a brand new remix I did of Lil Wayne’s amazing song “I’m Single.” Those of you familiar with the OG song know that it’s not really a club banger–it’s a slow 126 bpm pounder that is a pretty great song in its own right, but I thought it would work really well as an energetic club joint too. I’m really happy with how this turned out and it’s been a really great response in the club so far. Hope you guys enjoy it!

This is awesome and you’re not unless you download it right now and enjoy the living hell out of it! Eleven’s words on it:

“I don’t really know how else to put this… I’m a big Devin The Dude fan!

He’s the perfect combination of an exceptionally talented musician, a great MC, and a hilarious & charismatic guy. He’s been co-signed by and been on records with everyone from Scarface to Kool G Rap, The Roots to Jay-Z, Dre and Snoop to De La Soul. (And that’s only the big names! I’d be typing all day if I listed everyone that ever called him for a guest verse or some singing on a chorus.) Just before the first of the year, I sat down & started going through everything he’s ever been on to unearth all my personal favorites. While doing that, in addition to wishing I smoked weed, I got to thinking on how similar Devin was to another Dude character. Months later, the unholy combination of Devin Copeland + Jeffrey Lebowski + Joe Eleven emerged from the laboratory. And with that…”

But wait! If you like the mix, make sure you cop Devin’s new album, “Suite #420″ when it drops next week. On 4/20. (Ha) You can find buy links & all his tour dates on Devin’s myspace
