For quite some time I’ve been meaning to put together a primarily Hip-Hop Club mix that represents the kind of stuff I wind up playing in the club on any given Friday or Saturday night. In many respects, playing Hip-Hop in the club can turn into club karoake, where people just want to sing along to songs they know the words to. I’m not mad at this at all because, on the rare occassion that I go out and get it in, this is basically my favorite thing to do too. But, from a DJs perspective, playing the same 25-40 records in primetime gets kind’ve old, so I tend to try and spice it up with some unexpected blends or random songs that people don’t necessarily know all the words to, but the shit still goes off. so when my homies in Burlington, Vermont asked me to do a mix for their upcoming party NIGHT VISION that I’m playing this Friday, that’s kind’ve what I wanted to make the mix represent: some predictable stuff, followed by some unpredictable blends, mashes, and remixes. All in all, just something that’s fun to listen to. So yeah, this is the type of stuff I expect to be playing this Friday in Burlington, Vermont at the NIGHT VISION party at Red Square. Our friend and sometimes mentor Roctakon put together this really fun mix of classic House records for Opening Ceremony, who asked him to put something together to celebrate Party Girl Parker Posey’s bday. Here’s Roc’s description of the mix:

When I was a kid, Party Girl was one of my favorite movies. If you were 16 in 1995, an aspiring DJ, and not-so-closet total dork, Mary would have been everything to you too. I picked songs I know she would have danced to, songs that I really did dance to, and songs that for me define that era. This mix is a tribute to her and to my late teens, where I spent a lot more time as patron than DJ, a lot more time dancing to house music, and a lot more time romanticizing Parker Posey.

Our friend, mentor, and old-head DJ Ayres started a great mix series over on his website called “Heavy Warmup” where, in his own words “I’m sharing my favorite DJs’ warmup sets, showing you how the pros get a crowd moving without burning through all the big records before midnight.” Really dope series. If you’re a DJ, you know how frustrating it is when some new jack DJ thinks that playing all the hits at 10:47 PM is how you get a party crackin’. NAGL, YOUNG BOL! Anyway, Ayres did a mix, DJ Eleven did one, and now DJ Anonymous from the Top Billin crew did one. Great stuff and please let this be a lesson to all y’all aspiring DJ dudes: there’s literally THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of songs you could be playing in your opening set to get the party popping.

Sad day. As my man THE SHOW aka The Class Prez said on twitter:

RIP Nate Dogg!! There would be no T-Pain, Akon, or whoever else making a living off just singing hooks without his trail blazing talent!!

The really remarkable thing about Nate Dogg to me was not only how vital he sounded on every single song he was in, but how universally accepted he was. I was surrounded by a lot of true school boom bap nerdery growing up and we all had pretty vocal and varying opinions on rap music. There were a few things however that we all agreed on and somehow or other, the fact that Nate Dogg was amazing was one of these things. His vocals have also aged really well. They don’t sound dated to me… they sound timeless. If you just take a quick glance at hip-hop, it might be easy to accuse Nate Dogg of being a cursory footnote, but anybody who knows anything about rap music knows just how important this dude is, was, and hopefully always will be. RIP Nate Dogg.
