The Incredible General Tso’s Philly Cheesesteak

From the Horse’s mouth:

I’m doing this shit, quite possibly tonight. Since I’m in St. Louis and the only thing resembling (I think) a cheesesteak is at Penn Station subs. I’m going to get a sandwich there, drive across the street to my old work (China Wok) and take the culinary journey to awesome town. I have access to the wok and all common ingredients found in a chinese takeout spot.

    Here’s my plan.
-Purchase regular steak sandwich w/onions and peppers, hold the cheese
    -Go to China Wok
-Cook up a wok full of gen tso’s chicken (our recipe is basically hot braised chicken with broc.)
-Get 3 or 4 raw crab rangoons, remove the cheese and spread on the inside of the top half of the bun
-Place cooked gen tso’s chicken on top of the beef, peppers and onion and add the other half of the bun
-Wait about 15 minutes to debate why I am doing this
    -Eat sandwich
-Collect money won from bet placed with Vietnamese owner and chef
    -Brag about it here

Disgusting or delicious? Probably both. But, whatever the case, Trapper Juan needs to get this in the City Paper ASAP.

Shaviro on “Monster’s Ball” and Hollywood Racism

I just stumbled across Steven Shaviro‘s old but absolutely wonderful assessment of the critically acclaimed film “Monster’s Ball,” a film that–must I remind you–Halle Berry won an Academy Award for. He starts off his post with the following inciting words and continues along a similar strain. Brilliant stuff.

Seeing Monster’s Ball made me wish that James Baldwin were still alive, because Baldwin wrote the book on the racial hypocrisy of Hollywood. Monster’s Ball continues the tradition of films like The Defiant Ones and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner–films that wear their ostensibly anti-racist messages on their sleeves, while actually continuing to perpetuate the worst racist stereotypes…

Monster’s Ball is lame in nearly all respects. The cinematography is TV hack work at best, and the editing is almost inexplicably incompetent…

But forget that. Here’s a film that flatters its white audience by congratulating them for being far beyond racism, while perpetuating the hoariest fantasies of jungle fever.

Dec. 1st : Philly : White T’s and White Belts

So Crossfaded Bacon was in the house this past Friday at the monstrous White Ts & White Belts in the northern-most edge of Northern Liberties at the Red Warehouse in Philly. Shit was bananas. Dan the Swede, emynd and Bo Bliz, and Caps and Jones had every girl in the place shaking her proverbial money maker, and all 500 people in the fucking building were wasted by the end of the night.

It hasn’t been done this big since the (unfortunately) long-gone days of Hollertronix.

Thankfully, my man DrinkMoloko was up in the spot, repping the ‘Burg (Williamsburg) and documenting Friday night’s antics with a wealth of wonderful pictures here (Part 1), here (Part 2), and here (Part 3).
