Gregg Nyce Blends

A couple really dope dancehell blends by Gregg Nyce. There’s some sour notes on the “Single Ladies Anthem” blend, but for the most part it sounds good. I guess he put Wayne’s horrible hit “Ms. Officer” over some Estelle song I’ve never heard of, but it’s perfectly in key and sounds really good (especially the bridge!!). Good, useful work!

Maino “However Do You Want It”

Maino is not my favorite rapper in the world, but this is a great song. Jacking the Soul II Soul “Back To Life” vocals and, even though dude looks like an effing HERB, JR Rotem KILLS the beat. So dope.

Cousin Cole “Love Lockdown” Disco House Remix

Another really awesome “Love Lockdown” Remix by big homie Cousin Cole that’s only up on his Myspace right now. It completely recontextualizes the song into something new. I’m a big fan!

I’ll keep you updated on the download availability, but as of right now, go listen on dude’s myspace.

Kanye West “Love Lockdown” (Steven Bloodbath 1993 Edit)

I know we’ve all heard 100 remixes of “Love Lockdown” by now, however… I don’t know about y’all, but I haven’t heard one that I’d be willing to play out. My buddy Steven Bloodbath remedied the absence this morning when he hit up my inbox with his “1993 Edit.” Besides having the best myspace address in the game (myspace.com/slutparty), he’s also a talented producer and DJ. On this track, he keeps it pretty simple for the most part, adding the “Think” break and chopping it slightly, then adding some really dope ravey synths during the hook (presumably that’s what the “1993” is referencing in the subtitle) that bolster the song without taking it so far left field that the Beckies will be thrown off. I’m really into it and I’m psyched I didn’t have to waste an hour making my own play-outtable version of this song.

Get it!!

A few words about Mr. Bloodbath before I go… Steve has always been one of my favorite DJs to go see play out in Philly. He’s really knowledgeable about a whole lot of music and has a great sense of crowd control: he isn’t scared to play crowd pleasing classics nor is he unwilling to drop some random obscure favorites. Most impressively, he really knows how to work a crowd and just OWN the room. He’s also got a great sense of humor when he’s playing, which I’ve always found difficult to do without crossing the line into ironic, kitschy-ness. He’s capable of toeing that line without stumbling over it, and he’s equally as fun to hear playing hip-hop, disco, or weird rave stuff that my ignorant ass has never heard before. His Thursday weekly “Mo’ Money No Problems” at Silk City has really filled the Thursday night void that Low Budget left when he left the 700 Club and moved to LA, but Steve’s party eventually moved in and has been going strong for the better part of the past couple years. Anyone that’s DJed in Philly knows what an accomplishment it is to hold down a consistently successful weekly in a city where they scene is so incestual, but Steve has done a really great job and I’m legitimately sad to see him moving to LA in the coming months.

He’ll FINALLY be DJing with us in November at the Bounce at the Barbary. Flyer and more details coming soon.

Emynd “Knee Deep Theme”

Haven’t posted any new ish in a while so I thought I’d post a newer track I made this weekend. While I’m not usually a fan of remixing songs that are already effective on the dancefloor in their original context, I thought a party break styled Bmore remix of “Knee Deep” would be a useful way to update the song so I can incorporate it into some of my more soulful and break-inspired Bmore sets. It’s really really simple with pretty standard drum work and some vocal samples that keep it moving forward, but all in all, I think it’s a useful, fun, and effective track.

As always, thoughts are welcomed in the comments section!

5th Ward Weebie ft Lil Wayne “Bend It Ova”

A new track by 5th Ward Weebie featuring Lil Wayne courtesy of Mr. 604 over at our new blog devoted to New Orleans Bounce music. The original was just Weebie, but he got Wayne on it. Obviously Bounce influenced, and really really dope. It’s also pretty fresh to hear Wayne quoting Gotty Boi Chris with his “BEND OVEEEER! BEND OVEEEER!” chant.
