Made in Queens is a documentary by Nicholas Randall and Joe Stevens documenting a fresh group Trinidadian kids in a Queens subperb. Lead by teenage master builder Nicholas Ragbir, the squad turns BMX bikes into speaker balancin, mobile block party making monsters. Peep game here:
Big ups to DJ Benzi (NSFW website) for putting me up on this amazing Three Six Mafia remix of Santogold Phil $’s ex-babysitter’s “Shuv It.” Project Pat kills it and the beat is typcial Three Six madness.
I’m just as hype over “Funk Dat 2009” as Emynd is, and it immediately made me think of my other favorite irreverent throwback hip-hop track catchphrase, “I’m Not Gon’ Be Able To Do It.” How hot is it to tell some really cute light-skinned girl about herself in the 1992 era of New Jack City and Mike Tyson’s rape conviction? I’m all about how the bass opens up this track and the thats’s-not-a-word nonsensical lyrics like “move into a crib in some suburbian area.” Such a great combination; it makes me want to start saying “Eat My Shorts!” again just to be a new jack crotchety old-head.
The first great rap song I’ve heard in 2009. I know we’re only like a week in, but hot damn this song is absolutely incredible. Follow homie on Twitter or check his myspace.
In the mean time, hit up the always great Blvd St and cop this song and super big thanks to CB Rap for putting me up on dude. Sooo damn good.
Saw this posted on the hollerboard and was momentarily terrified. Was expecting a horrible Blog House remix that updated this classic House song into something unbearably Bass-heavy and predictably formatted like “UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ (music drops out)… FUNK DAT! (bass drops) WAMPY WAMP WAMP WAAAHMP WAAHMP.” Thankfully, it’s a really tasteful update of the song with some more relevant but equally hilarious lyrics. Highly recommended!
Check out Oh Snap!! on myspace and he should have some new stuff up on Beatport soon.
In August of last year Morro de Provincia, touted by Brazilian press as Rio’s most violent favela, made news for a different reason: the completion of 28 Millemetros: Women, an installation by French Photographer/Street artist “Jr.” The artist documented women in the Favela and wheat pasted their images on house facades. A BUNCH OF R&B DOWNLOAD (192 kps)
This month, I (Emynd) wanted to make a mix of some of the new-ish R&B I’ve been into so I could listen to it on my just-long-enough-to-be-annoying drive to work every day. Some of it is cheesy, some of it is sappy, some of it is HARD, and some of it is guilty pleasure steez, but whatever… I fux with this stuff. Serg will hate this, but you shouldn’t. Mostly done in one-take with a bit of editing here and there to clean up some stuff. I scratched a little bit too much in parts because I got all ADD while doing this in one-take, so sorry about that. Anyway, enjoy!

Thanks to Philly Sh*t Blogspot, Cyssero’s “Swagg It Out” Remix featuring Gillie, Mike Knox, Meek Millz, and Readi Rok. Meek goes in but he’s still a bit sloppy. Homie needs to tighten it up a bit.

French Wheat Paste artist “WK Interact”, whose work is pictured above, graces the cover of the current issue of Juxtapoz magazine. Last week the artist was rushed to a Miami hospital during an Art Basel Art Show after allegedly being knocked out by the prolifically destructive graffiti writer “Nekst”. The beef stems from the wall pictured above, which was painted months ago on a bustling NY corner. WK got permission to wheat paste the wall in the daytime over the underlying graffiti of “Wyse”, a crew member of “Nekst”. Both “Wyse”and “Nekst”eventually went back and painted the 2nd image at night.
Whatever you think about the use of violence, the aesthetic of the pictured graffiti or motivations for any of the above, this example makes clear the fact that one thing that separates graffiti from other forms of art is its unwritten code of social norms. If you go over people you may have a problem. For more info…
The fine folks at Unruly got a certified top 40 hit on their hands.
If you haven’t heard DJ Class’s incredible “I’m the Sh*t” yet, let me first of all put you on to this amazing song with some SERIAL top 40 potential and also scold Philly radio for being so effing far behind the curve on this one. For those that don’t know Class is one of the OG Bmore Club heads responsible for some of your favorite Bmore Club joints that you know all the words to but have no idea who it is. “EAST SIDE WHERE THE F*CK YOU AT! LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS UP!” Yeah, that’s DJ Class. And “Stop Snitchin’?” Yeah, that’s DJ Class, too. Everyone in Philly knows these songs, and yet somehow, Class’s new joint is not getting any radio love while it’s getting played in Bmore, Atlanta, New York, and even LA. THIS SONG IS GETTING PLAYED 3,000 MILES FROM HERE, BUT NOT IN PHILLY?! The old guard that govern “urban” radio in Philly refuses to break songs like this, instead choosing to force-feed the new 50 Cent down our throat instead of supporting some homegrown regional music that speaks directly to the youth of this region. Sure, dudes will go ahead and play this song in a couple weeks after it’s blown up all across the country, but there is a local, regional audience that LOVES Club and Party Music here in Philly, but the DJs on the radio all but ignore it except for the 10-15 minutes a week where they do the exact same ol’ Club Music/Party Music set they’ve been doing since 2004. It’s absolutely pathetic. And these are the same dudes that wonder why we don’t have a strong regional identity? Yeah, maybe Club and Party Music isn’t the regional identity you WANT to exist around these parts, but the truth of the matter is, this type of music is popular among the urban youth of Philly and part of the reason that radio sucks so much in Philly is because the folks that run the radio refuses to treat this place like it has any regional identity. The same damn 20 songs have been in rotation for the past 7 months. So pathetic.
But back to this track… Luckily, Jermaine Dupri and Trey Songz are more forward-thinking than the bitter old heads on the Clear Channel radio stations here and layed verses down on Class’s track while wyling out to in the studio (Download it here. It’s BANGING!) Rumor has it, Puffy reached out to get down on a remix as well. So yeah Philly, excellent work being way behind the curve on this track that’s really about to do some major things.
In case you missed anything I did from 2008… I updated all the zshare links for all these tracks and mixes as well. Hope you find some of this stuff enjoyable and/or useful.

Imagine a diverse group of young(early-mid 20s) International artists of the same medium connecting , collaborating and selling via one comprehensive website that features all of their work. Sure, this is not a new concept but Depthcore, a digital art collective, presents a nice model for how nichey artists who don’t know, but respect each other’s work, can support each other. The mission of the group is to highlight innovation in an “industry that is inundated with repetition”.
