Emynd – Philly 2 Bmore – www.unrulyonline.com

1. Emynd “To All My Haters”

A pretty simple and traditional track with a lot of bass and a menacing synth line. I rocked the most memorable line from Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know” (“…to all my Haters!”) and added a silly “F*ck you!” chant but this is by no means a “Dey Know” remix–it’s a whole new song. So far, this ish has worked really well in the club alongside a lot of the more aggressive Bmore that a lot of us already play. People love yelling “F*ck you!” apparently. Obviously, this track is really Mike Mumbles and Say Wut inspired.

3. Emynd “Philly 2 Bmore”

Another track that is influenced greatly by the stuff Mike Mumbles and Say Wut are doing with chopped and pitched vocal samples. The “Philadelphia” and “Baltimore” samples are from “Dancing In the Street” and I just thought it was kind’ve a cool concept to bring this EP together (CONCEPTUAL BMORE, SON!). The middle parts are real traditional and simple with the Lil Jon “What!” sample, the dick beat, and the chopped Nina Simone break, but we all know that simple Bmore ish often knocks the hardest.

4. Emynd “Oogum Boogum Theme”

I love Bmore soul remixes and wanted to make sure this EP had one. My big homies Brendan Bringem and Pandemonium Jones had the OG Brenton Woods song on a soul mix they did and that immediately gave me the idea for this song. I didn’t love this song at first, but my dude Starkey who mixed and mastered it spent a lot of time on it and actually made me like it a lot more by doing a phenomenal job with it. He’s highly recommended if you’re looking for Mixing and/or Mastering work (www.starkey-music.com).

5. Emynd “Smalltown Chavy Boy”

I’ve been meaning to make a Bmore remix of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy” forever but only got around to it recently. I wanted this to be structurally and aesthetically similar to Scottie B’s “London Wild.” This joint has pretty good crossover appeal for the more Hipster audience but still sounds good in a more traditional Bmore set as well.

7. Emynd “Back At Your Ass”

A really simple but effective song. It doesn’t sound like much on your computer speakers or in your bedroom, but everytime I play this joint out, it gets a really good reaction. Again, I think the effectiveness is found in its simplicity. I have a tendency to really over-produce stuff and just keep adding stuff until my ish is muddled and somewhat incomprehensible, but this is simple and it works.

8. Emynd “Urgent Party Break”

I’m not sure how useful this is in a party situation, but I’ve always loved this synth line (I know it from DJ Laz’s “Stick Out Your Butt” but I’m not sure if it originates there or is from an older electro song) and wanted to make a barebones, Bmore-inspired party break out of it. It’s more 4 on the floor with hints of Bmore and Miami Bass drum elements. I’m into it.

Madonna “Like A Prayer (Emynd’s It Takes Two Blend)”

A blend (MASHTASTIC) I did way back in the day that showed up on the Emynd & Bo Bliz Lemon Red mix a couple years back. It still gets a lot of play in certain (i.e. WHITE) situations and goes over well. Basically just adding beefier drums to anything is always a good idea.

Bass Invaders Mix by Nick Yoder & Ghostdad

My man Ghostdad with Nick Yoder. In Ghostdad’s words:

[i]so I been messing around with lots of laptop doodads as of late (see The Dadsampler downstairs) but there aint nothing better than leaving the laptop at home and mixing straight vinyl. I do a monthly with my man Nick centered around classic bass and derivatives thereof. He’s got a shit ton of amazing bass records and I’ve got few gems myself so we layed it down in this live vinyl mixtape for the good people at Vinyl Exchange Radio. A few newer selections in there as well, guess we repped Flamin Hotz kinda hard but those are good 12″s! Holler at Emynd too that’s a dope track. Anyway please do give a listen if you like old school Baltimore, Baile, Bass, House jams etc. There’s a bunch of other great mixes on the VERadio page as well be sure to click through!

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas “Dancing In the Street” (Emynd’s “Treat ’em Right” Swizz Beats Blend)

Emynd’s Lunch Break Beats is a series of club-friendly blends, edits, or beats Emynd produced on his laptop (usually while sitting in his car on some random side street in Wilmington, D-ware just after eating his WaWa lunch) while on his lunch break at his 9 to 5.

The whole series can be found here.

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #7:

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas “Dancing In the Street”
(Emynd’s “Treat ’em Right” Swizz Beats Blend)

If you’ve been riddiming up the Mary J “Just Fine” Remix with Wayne (produced by Swizz Beats) with Chubb Rock’s “Treat ‘Em Right” like me, this little blend might come in handy to help keep the vibe going. Portions of this sound a little bit off, but I think on the whole, this works surprisingly well and can rock a variety of crowds. As always, thoughts are appreciated!

Andy Roy

We here at Crossfaded Bacon (Bo and I) grew up skate rats. Like most kids our age, we had dreams of switchflip backside tailsliding huge ledges a nd worshiped street dudes like Koston, Penny, Mariano, Pepe Martinez, Ricky Oyola, etc more often than we dreamt about finding sick lines through FDR. But, even though we were street/tech dorks, we still held some appreciation for a select few “daggers”/”heshers.” High on the list were folks like John Cardiel, Jason Adams, and Chris Senn. That crazy mo’ fo’ Andy Roy was pretty well respected as well. I had the pleasure of seeing dude skate in person a couple times when I lived in San Jose. The first and most memorable time was when he came through with John Cardiel and a couple friends to session my boy Jesse Erickson’s mini-ramp. Cardiel and Roy were both killing it, and the thing I remember the most about that day is when Andy Roy was trying to jump off my friends trampoline into the mini-ramp. Strangely, I don’t remember if he actually landed it (I’m pretty sure he didn’t), but I remember seeing the sequence for it in Thrasher so I’m pretty sure he went back and did it a couple weeks later.

Anyway, here’s a funny/disturbing interview with him in Big Brother jacked from the awesome site BOBSHIRT.

Apparently, he’s offering skateboard lessons on craigslist as well. Woah.

Michael Penn Photography

The gracious and talented Michael Penn recently contacted me to inform me that I had used two of his pictures for our Philly Love mixtape. I originally found the pics through google image search and I’m actually really grateful that Mr. Penn got in touch with me because he linked me to his website and his flickr account which both contain some really magnificent photography. I’ve linked some of my favorites below, but I’ve got to say the entire “Under Philadelphia” series is amazing and I’m definitely going to be purchasing a couple of these prints in the very near future. Hopefully, some of his work will be appearing on our future projects in a more legitimate fashion.

Definitely go and peep some of the pics and don’t be afraid to support him. Click each of the below for the full size image.

I GO BY THEM GOON RULES

Big homie Say Wut — one of the many Baltimore Club kings over at Unruly Records out of Bmore — recently made this staggeringly dope remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli.” Keeping the simplicity of the OG, Say Wut just chops the hell out of his favorite “Go” sample making a dope little chop-and-melody combo that absolutely KNOCKS. The 808s and drums are basically the same as the OG, but the “GO!” chops give this some new life and really works in the club. Drop the original “A Milli” and then half way through just rewind that bia and drop this ish.

Random Dancehall Blends

Going out by request to my man Brek One, here’s a couple of dancehall blends I use in the club or have used on various mixtapes in the past. The “Under Mi Sensi” blend with “Presidential” still gets a great response on the club to this day, despite being a bit off key. The “Hyot Gal Today” jawn is GLARINGLY out of key, but I still think it sounds kind’ve cool. The beat is such a monster. “Trapstar” is one of those anthemic beats that gets me everytime and while I hardly ever play the OG “Trapstar” or this remix in the club, it is definitely one of my favorite “IM WASTED AND THIS IS MY LAST SONG” joints to drop late night. Lastly, in a much different vein is a bit of a true school anthem for rap nerds: I’ve always loved Diamond D’s Axelrod-jacking “Hiatus (Remix)” and Beenie Man has a history of sounding great over these true school boom bap beats.

As always, thoughts are appreciated.

215hiphop.com & Crossfaded Bacon Present: It’s The Year 2000

So we’ve teamed up with our homies at 215hiphop.com to throw this new party where we focus on dance hits from a particular year. First up is the year 2000 and the album covers on the poster below should give you a good idea of some of the jams we’ll be pumping through the speakers at the severely under used upstairs (at least for dance parties) at Johnny Brenda’s. Mark it on your calendar. It’s gonna be cray-cray!

Philly Love Volume 1: Philly Favorites Mixtape

Click For Detail
Photography on Cover Images by Michael Penn

Linked below is a pretty thorough mix of Philly rap that Bo and I did that reaches from Cool C and the Tuff Crew, through the State Property and Roc years, all the way up to new-comers like Joey Jihad and Meek Millz. We completed this about two years ago so there isn’t much new stuff, and it’s really impossible to be exhaustive when making mixes like this–you’re bound to leave someone disappointed with what’s been included and what’s been excluded. But, that being said, since we never wound up doing anything with this mix and we’re both still really happy with it, we figured we might as well post it on the internets for the world to download.

Big shout outs to Cosmo Baker who was a big influence on this mix (he was the reason we put “40 Barz” up on this ish). I know he’s been talking about working on a Philly rap mix of his own for several years now and Lord knows if he ever completes it, it’ll be light-years better than this one. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this though. By the way, yes, we know the Krown Rulers are from Camden.

Philly, stand up!
