GO READ A BOOK YOU ILLITERATE SOMUVABICH

OK, any of us that have day jobs know the routine. The best way to read long ass articles at your desk and not get caught is to copy and paste the text from Bill Simmons’s latest post into a Word Document or an Outlook Email so it looks like you’re writing an email or doing something productive. The absolutely brilliant minds at READATWORK.com have taken this logic one step further and made books that you can read online at your work computer because they’re disguised as Powerpoint presentations (click here or the picture above to get a glimpse of a page of the disguised version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “The Ice Palace”).

This is the best thing I’ve ever seen EVER.

Check the VIMBY video of White T’s

yeah man. no footage from an actual white t’s party at the arts garage, but we love the love.also, me and emil started skating again. because of this, i was peeping some youtube footage of skaters. now, i haven’t really watched a skate video for a good 7 years. its pretty hard to believe how good people are now. my question is this… how much longer can the level of skating continue to be raised? besides competition, i don’t really know what is making switch kickflip backside nosebluntslides possible? whatever. anyway, my boy pete eldridge is fucking sick and way better than when i used to skate with him ten years ago(not surprisingly). here is some sick footage of him i was checking out. he kills switchstance and still has that dope, smooth, style.

one of the best parts about my 20’s has been me being able to see so many of my old friends succeed in shit they WANTED to do. life can’t get much better. I SEE YOU PETE!!!

WHITE T’S FRIDAY!!!
SAVALA’S with CAPS SATURDAY!!!

i hope i survive next weekend.

COUNTDOWN TO FREE AT LAST WTF??

alright, that free shit came out last week. and oh yeah, that shit is blazing. the hectic news is that supposedly Beans’ shit has already leaked. DAMN!!! i was waiting all year bitching about albums not coming out and now i don’t even have time to listen to them all. jay–>free–>beans..

definitely can’t complain though. in fact i want to shoot you a link of the og track that was used for my current favorite song on the album(freeway’s)- “this can’t be real”. it is a gil scott heron track entitled “did you hear what they said?” of course i wouldn’t be posting it if it wasn’t dope itself.

Skanks & Jaeger Bombs

They both fucking rule.

This is more about North Jerz than South Jerz but I’ll be damned if I haven’t hung with some people like this and didn’t have a GREAT FUCKING TIME. Seriously. Here is to trance, 2 1/2 hour drives that should take an hour, jaeger(of course), having sex in crowded shore houses in front of other people, and otherwise normal people that commit themselves to this lifestyle until their mid 30’s. MAN LOVE.

HANDS UP THUMBS DOWN

Our buddies over at Shop Gentei in the fabolous city of Baltimore have just introduced their newest shirt design based on Blaqstarr’s BTOWN anthem “Hands Up Thumbs Down” (a song that is also huge in Philly right now). The shirt is available now so go on over to the shop (map) when you’re in Bmore and scoop one.

Squad call him Reefy

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I thought I would post this youtube of philly rapper and Crossfaded Bacon fam Reef the Lost Cauze. Reef is a fucking really dope rapper who has been grinding at this rap shit way before people even rocked guess jeans. He gets insane amounts of underground love, but deserves respect across the entire rap spectrum. Life has a way of pulling people in different directions, and I don’t see Reef as much as I used to, but I just know the bol will continue to stay thorough and keep making real music people in Philly can feel and can be proud of.

Peep the V-Twinz produced, “The Sound Of Philadelphia”. Reef borrows the song title from the famous Philly record label that Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff spawned(you should know that), and reflects on some of the realities we deal with living in Philadelphia- drugs, violence, poverty, corruption, frustration, and unhealthy food(which is actually a good thing).

The joint is a little old, but now is always a good time to think about the shit going on around us.

Peace y’all.

Vladamir Kato

First of all, sorry for the lack of posts. Rest assured that Bo and I are hard at work on our second EP for Flamin Hotz Records and we’re also in the midst of booking some BIG stuff for the next coming months. We will also be posting a lot of music that didn’t make the cut for the record but will definitely still be really useful. Please keep checking back.

But, I just discovered Mr. Vladamir Kato because our friends in Toronto commisioned him to do the drawing above of the Philly Phanatic on the flier for our show in Toronto (see sidebar for gig schedule). Needless to say, the flier is awesome and so is the rest of Vlad’s work. His stlye is really playful but still precise and calculated. I’m a big fan of illustrations that do more than just accurately capture how something looks, but have a bit of unmistakable pizzazz. That being said, you can tell that Vlad’s style is pretty influenced by graffiti. It’s got a lot of bold lines and thick outlines as well as a strong use of color. I’m pretty sure the description of his stuff above does it no justice at all and even sounds a bit cliche, so I’m going to stop playing fake art critic and post some of his stuff below.

Check out his page if you’re interested.

Put It On (Bo Bliz Remix)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I was playing around with some old records after making some party beats last night. Some snares sound especially crisp when you are cutting them, and fortunately this one has about four bars of some rugged ass bassline after it. I hooked this beat up real quick and decided to keep some cutting in the loop to be extra gully. I threw Big L on there and called it a wrizzap(turkey and cheese bitch).

Enjoy the rest of y’all summer, see everybody next First Friday in September. Until then imma enjoy a couple weeks off dj’in, watch the phils’ playoffs hope crumble(DAMN COLE!!!!), and get ready for football. Be safe folks.

Oh yeah, I finally listened to this Turf Talk album that everyone has been hyping so hard and I thought it was mediocre as fuck. The throwaway beats, the constant throwback interpolation hooks, the weak guests, and the whatever rapping didn’t do shit for me. Please feel free to explain to me why this album does not suck balls.

DO ME A FAVOR AND PLAY THIS ON SPEAKERS THAT HAVE BASS!!!!

080907: Notes on Nothing

FRIDAY in NYC: First things first, assuming my messed up back heals, I’ll be DJing with Bo on Friday in NYC for my homie’s 27th Birthday. Come through if you’re in Brooklyn. Details here.

Stevie Wonder US Tour: The dudest of dudes Stevie Wonder is going on a US Tour starting August 23. I need to get me some tickets!

Blood Clots on Flights: Did you know that one out of 4500 people will get blood clots from flying on a long flight in a cramped up space? That’s kinda crazy. I really enjoy flying, but it’s kind’ve ridiculous how little leg room there is. I’m only 6 foot 2 and it’s ridiculously cramped. It must be torture for anyone taller than that (DAN THE SWEDE). Anyway, here’s some tips on how to avoid it.

Kanye’s New Album Cover: While I think it’s dope that Kanye commissioned a “high art” artist to do his new album cover, there’s no denying that the cover isn’t the best looking thing I’ve ever seen.

Michel Gondry: New Michel Gondry flick featuring everyone’s favorite baby daddy (no, not Shawn Kemp).

Vick Chew Toy: This Michael Vick Chew Toy for your doggy is pretty funny except it looks NOTHING like Michael Vick.

08032007: Notes on Nothing

WHITE Ts: White Ts tonight baby! It’s going to be off the heezums as always. $10 BYOB AND free PBR, Sparks, and Vodka all night. 12 AM – 4 AM. Come through early, late, or whatever. Just come and party with me for my birthday. Gyeah!

Whoa: These Huaraches are off the hook. I keep telling myself I’m done with sneakers, but there’s ALWAYS MORE THAT I WANT. The Mita Trainers that just came into WTHN are crazy.

Ozomatli In Egypt?: I know Ozomatli is one of the more cringe-inducing rap-related non-rap collobarations of the past decade (i.e. PSUEDO RAP FOR WHITE PEOPLE), but I still find it interesting that the State Department has brought them out to the Middle East to do some shows. The band “was born at a labor rights demonstration 12 years ago, it regularly play[s] at antiwar rallies and that its members [are] outspoken critics of the Bush administration’s policies on everything from the war on terror to immigration” and yet here they were. I dunno what it means really, but I do find it interesting.

Unemployed Lloyd: Unemployed Lloyd’s blog is pretty hilarious.

COLD BEER: This is the best job ever.

Lightning Strikes Twice: Dudes been hit TWICE with lightning and he’s still alive.
