LUNCH BREAK BEATS #16:

Pryda “Reeperbahn” / Ying Yang Twins “Wild Out” (Emynd Blend)

Emynd’s Lunch Break Beats is a series of club-friendly blends, edits, or beats Emynd produced on his laptop (usually while sitting in his car on some random side street in Wilmington, D-ware just after eating his WaWa lunch) while on his lunch break at his 9 to 5.

The whole series can be found here.

Another modern day Hip-House blend with some good ol’ fashioned Swedish House and Crunk vocals blended on top. If you’ve been playing “Reeperbahn” in the club, you already know it’s a huge song. The Ying Yang Twins vocals really work on top and add a lot of energy to it for crowds who aren’t really ready for full on House shit. Thoughts and comments appreciated as always!

I’ve made a shit load of remixes and blends over the past couple years that I play in the club really often, but I haven’t bothered to compile them in a listenable mix yet so I thought this would be a good chance to do so. So this mix is intended to be a bit of a showcase of some of the many blends I’ve done recently as well as a fun, listenable mix with some really dope joints. It starts off with a bunch of the Dance Music vs Hip-Hop Blends I’ve been doing recently and transitions pretty radically into some more dancehall oriented stuff. Hope you guys enjoy it! Also, I think most of the blends and remixes in this mix are available for download somewhere on the site so if there’s a jam you like, look around the site a bit and you should be able to find it!

Thoughts and comments welcome as always!

More House stuff for that ass. I love the bassline on Miles Dyson’s “Intro” but hated the stupid 20th Century Fox crap at the begging so I blended it with Pryda’s “Animal” and added Ralphi Rosario’s vox briefly. It sounds like mayhem on paper, but as usual, it’s actually pretty tasteful in practice. Play it or comment about it or something.

Another blend involving some Euro House, this time blending the soulful vocals from Dajae’s “Everyday My Life” right on top of Frenchman Sebastian Leger’s remix of Arno Cost and Norman Doray’s “Apocalypse.” I’m really into Leger’s remix, but I feel like the vocals add a lot more energy and give the song a bit of a different vibe. My obsession with cheesy Swedish house continues… but I don’t give an eff what anyone says, the piano loop and breakbeat on “I Found You” is some of the most soulful ish I’ve ever heard. That ish is so hard, man. So yeah, I basically looped up the beginning of “I Found You” and made a Hip-House song out of this with Pase Rock’s “Get Money Kids” ‘pella. Already played this out a couple times and it’s worked really well. The build ups and break downs work really well and build a lot of energy. This is one of the better blends I’ve done recently. BANG IT! And leave some thoughts in the comments section if you feel inclined to do so.

I meant to post this ON Groundhog Day, but I missed it by a couple days. Close enough. Anyway, I’m reconsidering calling this series “STUFF THAT SOUNDS HORRIBLE ON PAPER BUT ACTUALLY WORKS” because this blend is a perfect example… it sounds like it’s the stupidest idea ever on some OMG MASH ISH, but this is actually pretty tasteful in my humble opinion. I didn’t have an acapella for the Pitbull and Young Boss song, but the beat/song is in key with the CVS and Christian Martin tune so I filtered out the kicks in the rap song and blended the two… and frankly, I think they sound awesome together and compliment each other well. I’m not exactly sure how useful this blend is or who the hell would be interested in hearing it but eff it, I think it sounds dope which is reason enough for me to post it.

Enjoy and please feel free to hit me up with some comments!

My man Bushy has been schooling me on the wonders of really cheesy Swedish House music, and I’ve been making a bunch of edits and blends of some of my faves that will work better in some cross-over situations–especially for people more familiar with hip-hop and dancehall. This Pryda and Sean Paul blend is the first in a bunch that will be coming over the couple weeks and months. Enjoy! As always, thoughts and comments are encouraged!

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #9:

Rihanna “Disturbia” (Emynd’s “Finally” Blend)

I hate the OG “Disturbia,” but it’s a popular song so I wanted to make a version that I could play and not hate myself for. I realized it was in key with CeCe Peniston’s “Finally” so I re-sequenced the 12″ version of “Finally” to fit around the “Disturbia” acapella, added some extra kicks for some oomph, and voila, a useful blend for a variety of club settings. Obviously, mixing into or out of the OG “Finally” is a good luck and a great transition into some classic House.

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #8:

T-Pain featuring Lil Wayne “I Can’t Believe It” (Emynd’s “Bookshelf” Blend)

Brendan Bringem bitched at me the other night trying to tell me I’m just a contrarian because I love “I Can’t Believe It.” He’s WRONG! The song is really charming and fun. T-Pain rhyming words together that hardly rhyme is just so damn likable (“Wisconsin” does NOT rhyme with “mansion” but it’s awesome). Wayne’s verse is atrocious and I’m not even really sure why I left it in this blend, but if you’re riddeming this up with the other joints from the Bookshelf riddim, you really shouldn’t have much trouble mixing out before Wayne gets his horrible on. By the way, I guess I should say a few words about this blend, right? Well, it works! There’s a few sour notes here and there, but nothing anyone in the club will notice and for the most part, it’s in key and gives this song a more energetic feel. Quite frankly, the Bookshelf riddim is my favorite damn riddim ever so I love throwing stuff on top of it. Hope you find it useful and comments are welcome as always!

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #7:

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas “Dancing In the Street”
(Emynd’s “Treat ’em Right” Swizz Beats Blend)

If you’ve been riddiming up the Mary J “Just Fine” Remix with Wayne (produced by Swizz Beats) with Chubb Rock’s “Treat ‘Em Right” like me, this little blend might come in handy to help keep the vibe going. Portions of this sound a little bit off, but I think on the whole, this works surprisingly well and can rock a variety of crowds. As always, thoughts are appreciated!

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #6:

Aaliyah “Are You That Somebody (Emynd’s Lollipop Blend)”

If you missed it, valedictorian homie (and resident hockey dork expert) CAPS posted a really thorough, tasteful, and listenable Aaliyah mix over at the Fader blog, full of Caps’s favorite jams ranging from the obvious to the obscure. May she rest in peace. I was reading Caps’ description of his mix on his blog and noticed a side note where he says the following:

Note: I made a very deliberate choice to kind of put myself in the background here, aka no C-C-C-CAPS!!!!! drops, no Aaliyah vox over the new Lil Wayne beat, no super scratchiti defacing the Are U That Somebody instrumental.

Well, a couple days earlier, I had thrown the “Are You That Somebody” acapella on top of “the new Lil Wayne beat” and his mix helped me muster up the energy to post it on the blizzog. I know there’s already way too many damn Lollipop-related mixes out there, and really, nothing is touching Timb’s production on the OG “Are You That Somebody,” but I think this works. And for the DJs, it’s a good way to end the night.

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #5:

UMD/Sharon S “Wonderful” (Emynd’s “Drop” Party Break)

I really know very little about House music and kind’ve just assumed this Sharon S song “Wonderful” (1993/4) was a really well-known, classic House track. Apparently it’s not though because I asked a couple in-the-know folks if they had a high quality mp3 of it so I could upgrade, and these know-it-alls knew nothing. A couple folks had heard it though, so it’s not completely obscure or anything. Anyway, this is one of my favorite House songs ever and I wanted to throw some stuff on top of the more spacious parts to make this more relevant for a crowd that isn’t made up primarily of House music nerds. So, I threw Fatman Scoop on top yelling a lot and Timbaland’s brief verse from “Drop” intros the song for easy mixing.

LUNCH BREAK BEATS #3:

The Roots “75 Bars (Inst)” / Busy Signal “Not My Problem” (Emynd Blend)

I recently told my man noz that Philly rappers should only rap on drums. That should be the Philly regional sound: rap, drums, and maybe a couple honks or chimes here and there (and, to a certain extent, that kind’ve is the legacy and history of Philly rap as is). “75 Bars” is another drum heavy Philly jawn that knocks so effing hard in its simplicity. As soon as I heard the song a couple weeks back, I knew I wanted to spicen it up a bit and put a Jamaican DJ on top. Busy Signal fits the ball quite well. I kept it short and sweet and threw some always effective Fatman Scoop chants on the intro.

Knock it!
